Resilience is key in today’s airline industry. Not only is it a vital characteristic for pilots, but it’s also a ‘buzz word’ in airline recruitment and training. More than ever, our industry needs resilient pilots. However, isolation, job insecurity and a potential health risk have made the current crisis also a threat to our mental well-being. Enter “We are Hummingbird” – a community of music lovers who have united to spread awareness of mental health by using music as a platform to encourage people to open up and engage in conversation.
We are Hummingbird is proving to be a novel way to build pilot resiliency by delivering pragmatic training that empowers individuals to collaborate and prevent mental health issues becoming worse through webinars, courses and online training.
For example, during a recent webinar entitled, “Breaking the stigma with music”, Hummingbird’s MD, Ian Hurst delivered a 30-minute talk that focused on mental health strategies pilots can adopt and responded to questions submitted online by webinar attendees. In the webinar, Hurst broke down what seems a complex navigating of dealing with mental health, and mental illness, into a simple form of visualizing, and putting into use simple practices to improve mental wellbeing overall.
Across industries and professions, mental health is a topic many people find difficult to talk openly about and pilots are no exception. A valuable resource during these times, We are Hummingbird is educational and inspiring. And exactly what our industry needs today.
